Wheat production, with gun sprinkler systems showing promise for increasing yields and water use efficiency compared to surface irrigation methods. The aim of this study was to evaluate portable gun sprinkler irrigation on wheat crop at Doddota district of Arsi zone. The effect of different operating pressure (250kpa, 300kpa and 350kpa) and riser height (1.5m, 2m and 2.5m) on discharge, application rate, radius of throw, coefficient of variation was checked for determining optimum operating condition that achieve high distribution uniformity and wheat production in the study area. The wheat yield was affected by distribution uniformity of gun sprinkler under combined effect of operative pressure and riser height. Accordingly, the highest distribution uniformity 97.2%, yield 5.590t/ha, grain yield 3.823t/ha, water use efficiency 0.77m3/kg and irrigation water use efficiency 0.92m3/kg was obtained under combined effect of 350kpa and 2m riser height. Therefore, for similar agro-climatic condition like Doddota using gun sprinkler with nozzle size of 12mm under operating condition of 350kpa and riser height 2m was recommended for obtaining higher distribution uniformity and wheat yield.
